International Forum on Water Resources and Sustainable Development in 2009

General account：More than 300 representatives from more than a dozen countries such as the United States, Japan, Russia, Australia, the European Union, India and China attended the meeting, including 15 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering and 8 foreign Academicians. These experts have a profound academic attainments, rich research experience and an understanding of the frontier of related disciplines in the field of water resources, and they brought their latest research results. Qian Zhengying, the former vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended the forum. Chen Lei, minister of water resources, attended and delivered a speech.
In the last 30 years, the social economy has changed dramatically, and the development and utilization of water resources has made a great progress, but at the same time, we have paid a lot of resources and environmental costs. It has become an important issue of concern for the water conservancy science and technology workers and government decision-making departments, that how to scientifically and reasonably develop and protect limited water resources, realize the efficient and sustainable development of water resources and support the sustainable development of social economy, which are also the problems that have been or will be faced by countries in the world. This meeting has important practical significance to explore these issues, promote the sustainable use of water resources and sustainable development of social and economic development.
Regional Workshop on Sustainable Development of Water Saving Irrigation in Asia and the Pacific

General account：The conference aims to comprehensively evaluate the development of water-saving irrigation in the Asia Pacific region, exchange experience and information of water saving irrigation, and analyze the existing problems Also the appropriate measures to promote the sustainable development of water saving irrigation in the Asia Pacific region are discussed. The meeting includes three topics, namely the key problems, scheme of sustainable development, and evaluation index and method of the sustainable development of water-saving irrigation. Nearly 60 experts and scholars attended this meeting, from more than 10 international organizations and regions, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, the United States, Australia, Indonesia and China. Zhai Haohui, a CPPCC member and former Vice Minister of Ministry of water conservancy, President of Chinese agricultural water and rural water supply Technology Association professor, was invited to attend the meeting and delivered an important speech.
The conference focused on the development of water-saving irrigation in the Asia Pacific region, had wide exchanges, in-depth discussion, sharing experience, and common consent, and proposed a plan to promote the sustainable use of water resources, which is very important for the development of water-saving irrigation.
The 10th water forum of China

General account：The theme of forum is "Water Problems and Countermeasures under Changing Environment". Cai Qihua, director of the Yangtze River Water Conservancy Committee, attended the forum and made a report on the subject of Practice and effect of real time operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir during flood season. Li Jian, Party Secretary of Wuhan University attended the forum and delivered a speech. Vice governor of Hubei Province, School of Water Resources and Hydropower, Wuhan University, Professor Shenglian Guo presided over the opening ceremony. Academician of Norway Academy of Sciences Lars Gottschalk, Huazhong University of Science and Technology Professor Yongchuan Zhang, and Nanjing Water Conservancy Scientific Research Institute Academician Jianyun Zhang attended the forum. More than 400 experts and scholars from universities and related research institutions, government departments, enterprises and institutions such as Wuhan University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, and Beijing Normal University, participated in the forum.
This session of the forum had five aspects of in-depth discussion, that is, "hydrological evolution law in the changing environment", "optimization of allocation and sustainable development of water resources in the changing environment", "hydropower resources development and reservoir group optimal operation", "flood and drought disaster evolution and countermeasure".
International Symposium of Ecohydrology and Water Security

General account:Some important figures attended the conference and gave a speech : Professor Feng You-mei, executive vice president of Wuhan University; Academician Liu Chang-ming from Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Guo Sheng-liang , vice governor of Hubei Province; Professor Pahl-Wostl Claudia, executive committee co-chair of the Global Water System Planning (GWSP) ; Professor E. Nickum James, vice chairman of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA); Professor Li-Liang Ren, vice chairman of the International Hydrological Science Association (IAHS); Liu Zhi-Yu, deputy chief engineer of the Hydrological Office of the Ministry of Water Resources.
The academic seminar had set up four special parts: the theory and practice of eco-hydrology, the theory and practice of water system science, the theory and practice of water safety, the operation and management of large water conservancy projects. A total of more than 80 academic representatives attended the meeting, 35 domestic and foreign well-known experts and scholars had been invited to make a relevant academic report, among which 17 foreign scholars came from the United States, Germany, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Malaysia and Holland and other countries. Considering the significant demand of the water security and assurance global and regional, experts at the conference shared the examples and experiences around the world and deeply discussed the key technologies and measures of water security and water ecological civilization construction in response to some key scientific issues, such as the processes of the basin water cycle and ecological hydrological, the formation mechanisms of droughts and flood disasters as well as the responses of the ecosystem to it, the policies of the water and environment pollution management, which had effectively promoted the development of the ecological hydrology and water resources management theory as well as the scientific study of the global water security.
WHU-Waterloo-CUG Joint Workshop on Water Environment

General account：More than 70 experts and scholars from three universities exchanged the latest research results, and discussed the international cooperation. This workshop covered fields of hydrological ecology, groundwater remediation and model calculation of water environment etc.
During the report, Bob Gillham, professor emeritus of University of Waterloo in Canada, famous expert in groundwater field, introduced research progress such as degradation of halogenated organic pollutants using granular iron on " Groundwater pollution remediation and permeable reactive barrier ".
Philippe Van Cappellen, chairman of the Canadian research association of ecological hydrology, expert in ecological hydrology field gave a wonderful academic report on " Pollutant transport and fate: from laboratory scale to field scale".
Wang Yanxin, president of China University of Geosciences, expert in groundwater pollution field combed the latest progress of his research team on " hydrological geological chemistry and biological geological chemistry in arsenic rich groundwater system ".
Yang Jinzhong, professor of Wuhan University introduced in detail the feasibility of data assimilation model to simulation results around the groundwater recharge of North China Plain.
The three parties of meeting also discussed in depth international cooperation mechanism, and reached a preliminary cooperation intention in aspects including education and scientific research. It is beneficial to giving full play to education and research speciality of different universities, accelerating the construction of teaching staff and promoting the internationalization of young teachers' scientific research projects.
